Chapter Thirteen

Merit had known that Elise was going to be busy doing all the last minute preparations for the Midsummer Ball from the time they had left the day spa yesterday until it was time to be seated for the dinner today. So after his morning run and exercises, he had left to explore the city of Myrtle Beach outside of the resort and didn’t return until it was time to start getting ready for the dance.

The moment he’d used his key card to open the front door of the mansion, though, something felt off.

“Hello?” he called out as he closed the door.

He waited a moment in the high-ceilinged entryway, looking toward the railing to the floor above and glancing at the rooms and hallways he could see from where he stood, then walked back toward the great room. As soon as he stepped from the hallway to the room, two people jumped out and yelled, “Surprise!”

“Graham! Tessa! What are you doing here?” He tried to calm his pounding heart as Tessa gave him a welcome hug and Graham clapped him on the back.

“We wanted to surprise you and see how you were doing,” Tessa said.

“You certainly surprised me.”

“Come in, come in,” Graham said, like he was welcoming him into his own place instead of showing up at Merit’s. Except Graham was the one who booked everything, so it was probably on the resort’s record as Graham’s place. “I’ve been getting Elise’s nightly reports, but I want to see how you are doing with my own eyes.”

“I’m good. How long are you staying?”

“Just until tomorrow afternoon.”

“We wanted to make sure we were here for the ball,” Tessa added. “Graham has been showing me the pictures Elise has been sending of the two of you, and I think you are just adorable together. I can’t wait to meet her tonight.”

“You have tickets to the ball?” He rubbed the back of his neck and tried to ignore the weight in the pit of his stomach.

“Of course!” Graham said. “I bought them and our plane tickets the same day I booked this place.”

The two of them were leading him to the couches, but he said, “I’ve been out all day. Let me just run to the restroom, then I’ll be right in.”

He calmly walked down the hallway to the bathroom and shut the door, then pulled out his phone and started typing.

GRAHAM IS HERE AT THE RESORT. His wife, Tessa, too. I thought I was doing good, but now he’ll be able to see in person how I’m doing. What if he doesn’t think I’ve been doing enough?
